3. Preparing Your Data for Sharing

Data sharing starts with data management. We offer three other courses relevant to preparing data for sharing. You can enroll in these for more guidance.

Key Considerations for Preparing Data:

Data Ought to Adhere to the Fair Principles (FAIR Principles, 2016)

You want to be able to share data that are FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. In order to adhere to best practices, research teams ought to create data management plans at the start of their project.

Data Management Plans are Essential

Data management plans (DMP) describes data that will be acquired or produced during research; how the data will be managed, described, and stored, what standards you will use, and how data will be handled and protected during and after the completion of the project (Data Management Plans, 2020).

Portage offers a DMP assistant that will guide you through the steps to set up a data management plan. The Portage DMP Assistant is a national, online, bilingual data management planning tool developed by Portage to assist researchers in preparing data management plans (DMPs). This tool is freely available to all researchers and develops a DMP through a series of key data management questions, supported by best-practice guidance and examples. The DMP Tool is another example of a step-by-step guide that will help you create a DMP. Watch the video below about DMP Assistant in order to guide you through creating a DMP.
