5. How Does CARE Relate to FAIR?

The CARE Principles relate to any Indigenous data, knowledge, or information that affect Indigenous Peoples, nation, and communities as a whole or individually (Carroll et al., 2021). Specifically, the ‘CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance’ are guidelines set forth to report concerns related to the people and purpose of the data (Carroll et al., 2021). CARE stands for: Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsibility, and Ethics and any respective sub-principles.

These principles were designed in 2019 to complement the FAIR principles as FAIR alone does not take into account the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples (DataStream, 2021). FAIR principles are guidelines for data while CARE principles are more focused on people and the purpose of the research (DataStream, 2021)
